OK...this is the last one from that magical Summer of 2006, while we were living in limbo land waiting for our house to be built. Living on NAF El Centro is a blast. You might not think it would be...but it is. You can walk anywhere on the base (if you can stand the heat) and most of what you need is right there. The commissary is tiny...but everyone knows you and going there is a social experience. The kids can ride their bikes to the movie theater or the "Jetmart" convenience store.
Something else that gives NAFEC the small town feel is bowling. For many years, the tiny bowling alley on base was the only one in town. Now a bigger, flashier one is open off base, but there is still something special about this blast from the past that can't be duplicated.
During bowing league season, we would all gather on Monday nights for cheap pizza, fresh chocolate chip cookies and the chance to watch our men defend their honor on these lanes:
We even bought uniform shirts from the thrift store and ironed their call signs on them (See Cliff's "trailer trash"?) along with their team logo on the back.
Pretty snazzy, huh?
Wow, look at that form!
Here's team "Khaki" lookin' mighty fine!
To tell you the truth, I don't even remember how the season turned out or where they placed...but I do remember how much fun we had with such a simple thing that brought us all together.
