We are the Stuarts (formerly of Imperial) now residing in Okinawa, Japan.

This blog started from a desire to bridge the miles as we were preparing to leave the USA for 3+ years. It has turned into much more. It's part travel diary, part personal reflection, part "sociology of military life" and part mommy-blog. We hope you read something here that is interesting to you (or at least not a total waste of your time).

I wonder if this would catch on in Utah?

Family Mart is a convenience store chain here on Okinawa. It's pretty much like your AM/PM or 7-11. You have your magazines, your candy, your sodas and ice cream. Miscellaneous auto parts, air fresheners and breath fresheners. There are a few differences, too:

For one, I think they have a bigger dried seafood and shelf-life-stinky-cheese section at Family Mart. Just a hunch.

When I was in here last, I went down the office/school supply aisle for the first time and saw this:

A pressed, white shirt at a convenience store/gas station. Only in Japan. But something tells me, if Utah gets a hold of this info...they won't be far behind. After all, you never know when you just might need a late-night white, collared shirt.

The shirts are so Japanese!

I wanted to ask how they are reacting to the silver medal in ladies figure skating over there? Do they see her as a big failure? They are such perfectionists right?

We were cheering pretty hard for the Korean winner I must say : )

The food you can buy in those is unbelievably fresh and tasty too. We always share a corn dog and spicy chicken thing whenever we take a road trip. Even the little donuts they sell in the packaged food are really good.

It is funny about those white shirts, isn't it?

It's also interesting to go into one in the afternoons when all the men and boys are hunched around the magazine section.
