We are the Stuarts (formerly of Imperial) now residing in Okinawa, Japan.

This blog started from a desire to bridge the miles as we were preparing to leave the USA for 3+ years. It has turned into much more. It's part travel diary, part personal reflection, part "sociology of military life" and part mommy-blog. We hope you read something here that is interesting to you (or at least not a total waste of your time).

Flashback Friday...Highland Games

OK, I will admit, I'm doing this flashback out of order, just for the sake of coordinating with tomorrows post...which is actually yesterday's post...because while I started this on Friday...I didn't have a clue what I was going to flashback about...until we had our Saturday adventure... and then it hit me...so I am doing Flashback Friday on Sunday. Got it? Good!

While watching the taiko drummers at the Eisa Dance Festival, I couldn't help but notice that each group had the same elements, but with a little individual twist...which reminded me of watching the bagpipe competition when we attended the Vista Highland Games in June of 2005 while living in San Diego. I am a music lover, and there are certain types of music I don't think I could ever tire of. Take my blog playlist here ("Cliff music" I should call it). Love it. Never tire of it. If you do, I apologize. Other music genres that fall into this same category for me: Sousa, Calypso steel drums, and bagpipes.

The sound of bagpipes goes right to my bones:

I could have stayed in the stands all day and watched entry after entry in this competition...

But there was haggis and such to eat...

And poles and such to toss...

Weapons to purchase...

Sheep dogs to see in action...

And smooch on afterward...

So I was out-voted. Can't wait till we can attend another. Until then, we are really enjoying the native music of Okinawa, too!

The End

I spent a New Years Eve in Edinburgh, Scotland many years ago and as the bells chimmed in the New Year I got to see what too many Scottish men do NOT wear under their kilts! I still have flashbacks many years later!

Lisa...I've only seen pictures and heard legends. Since you have your own Robert Burns there...I'm guessing you know personally?!

Gina...I'll bet that experience would be singed in your brain forever! What a unique experience, though!
