We are the Stuarts (formerly of Imperial) now residing in Okinawa, Japan.

This blog started from a desire to bridge the miles as we were preparing to leave the USA for 3+ years. It has turned into much more. It's part travel diary, part personal reflection, part "sociology of military life" and part mommy-blog. We hope you read something here that is interesting to you (or at least not a total waste of your time).

Flashback Friday...Wild Animal Memorial

Today's flashback takes us back about 4 years to our last visit to the Wild Animal Park. While the Wild Animal Park in East San Diego County is a great place to visit for anyone, it is especially significant to our family.

My grandfather helped to construct the Baja Cactus Gardens at the top of the park. It took many years of volunteer work from him and his partners. Whenever my grandma had the opportunity, she would sit with him and enjoy the view of the valley below while he worked.

After my grandma passed away from breast cancer in 1989, he had this pavilion constructed in her memory. There's a picnic bench inside, and it is one of the best places in the park to enjoy your lunch, or just take in the view.

I apologize for not including pics of the view here...but I didn't have any readily available. You'll just have to settle for this beautiful view:

Sometimes Corenne's hazel eyes look green, just like her great-grandma's. I know she would have loved this little girl as much as I do.
