Can you read this? Do you know what it is?
Troy is now a licensed driver! It was quite the funny experience, too. When we saw the tester walk in, I think both our hearts sank. He looked like the stereo-typical high school coach that teaches early morning drivers' ed. All he was missing was the belted, polyester shorts that rest below his belly and the whistle hanging from his neck. He said Troy's name WAY too much... "TROY! Come over here, TROY, I need you to sign this." "Let's go TROY"..."What are you driving today, TROY?" He had a very sour disposition, and although we didn't speak, when my hopeful eyes met his, He stared me down as if to say, "I eat teenagers for breakfast, floss my teeth with their hopes and dreams and your child is no more special than the last one I sent out of here in a crumpled heap."
I was praying the whole time they were gone and felt so nervous, I almost threw up. Of course I wanted Troy to succeed on his first try, but also, we probably wouldn't have another chance for him to test again before we leave the country as the DMV makes their appts so far out, so we'd be starting from square one.
When they came back I searched Troy's face (not easy to read) and he said, "I passed." I wanted to jump up and hug him and do a little dance right there in the DMV waiting room...but I caught a glimpse of Coach Sour Puss and regained my composure, settling instead for a congratulations high-5.
We took the form up to the counter and the lady looked at it and said, "Wow...'Good Drive'...we don't see too many of those!"
Troy said he was the first one to pass today, making only 3 out of an allowed 15 minor mistakes. He also observed, "I think that guy thinks it's his job to make people uncomfortable." (Troy is SO insightful!) Then he told me how he thought he had failed the test before he was even out of the driveway. Apparently, he brushed the curb with the back tire as he turned the corner. The Coach barked, "Have you ever driven this vehicle before?" Troy replied that he had, to which the coach further inquired, "ON A ROAD?!?"
Ahhh...it brings me back to my days of drivers training, with my dad riding shotgun. Good Times!
Troy drove us home, and all the other kids were waiting eagerly to hear the news. They jumped up and down and begged Troy to take them to get donuts. They settled for him taking us to dinner later...

Each of the kids wanted a turn sitting in the front with Troy. When he only had a permit, Mom or Dad had to sit shotgun.

The kids voted on where Troy should take us...and Carl's Jr. won...followed by the mall for some Christmas shopping. Even in holiday traffic...Troy did great.
Unfortunately, he has no sense of direction, so we probably won't be sending him out on his own anytime soon. At least he'll have Patrick to navigate their way to seminary in the mornings.
Oh, and no worries people, in Japan you have to be 18 to drive out in town...Troy will only be able to drive on base. (Whew!)
Anyhoo, when we got back from the mall, we were all SO exhausted, I totally forgot about Flashback Friday and went to bed (haven't been getting a lot of sleep lately). So now you know!
