We are the Stuarts (formerly of Imperial) now residing in Okinawa, Japan.

This blog started from a desire to bridge the miles as we were preparing to leave the USA for 3+ years. It has turned into much more. It's part travel diary, part personal reflection, part "sociology of military life" and part mommy-blog. We hope you read something here that is interesting to you (or at least not a total waste of your time).

Saturday Celebrations...and Frustrations!

Saturday we had TWO celebrations to attend in the San Diego-ish area. It was to be very convenient, as the first went from 4-7 (a wedding reception for a friend's daughter) and the other we wanted to get to at about 7:30...a birthday party for another friend. We decided we'd get to the first about 6:30, then head up to the other around 7. Sound like a good plan? I thought so. The Border Patrol had other ideas!

This was to be a wedding photo of the happy couple. Instead, you get a more casual shot. Why, you ask? Because the Border Patrol thought it was SO important to beef up security at the checkpoint Saturday night, when all of the happy Thanksgiving travelers are headed home. Apparently, people like to smuggle illegals in the backs of their minivans on holiday weekends, so they decided they needed to thoroughly inspect EVERY vehicle! What normally takes 5 minutes, took a solid hour!...of sitting there, and sitting, and never getting over 3 MPH, and sitting some more, seething, knowing there was no way we were going to make our first venue. We got there at 7:45...it was an outdoor reception, so we could see there was nothing going on but the last of the clean up, so we drove on, deflated, and cursing the Border Patrol.

We made the next party, though...and had a great time.

Here's Troy and Molly...they've know each other since they were 4.

(A little trivia...the Crabtree kids and the Stuart kids are the same ages...only they go girl, girl, boy, girl. We used to joke that we would make them all marry each other...that way there would be no arguments about who spent the holidays where. Our families spent many holidays together back then (our Oceanside days) and we thought it would be fun to just continue the tradition. Well, that idea didn't last long. Unfortunately, kids grow up into people with their own ideas (darn it!). One of the Crabtree girls (I don't remember which one) said to her mom, "When you are in each others baptism slideshows, it just feels wrong.")

More cool, young people (Sarah, Hunter, Jake, Patrick, anonymous friend)

Hey Tyler, good to hear from you! Your kids are darling...I see you had another one...either that or I'm in a time warp...he's a clone of Spencer! Please give Kristen and the kids our love, and hopefully we'll see you if we get to come back for Oct. conference. I just checked your blogs. Where is your cabin? It looks amazing. Cliff will be totally jealous. Take Care!
