We are the Stuarts (formerly of Imperial) now residing in Okinawa, Japan.

This blog started from a desire to bridge the miles as we were preparing to leave the USA for 3+ years. It has turned into much more. It's part travel diary, part personal reflection, part "sociology of military life" and part mommy-blog. We hope you read something here that is interesting to you (or at least not a total waste of your time).

Lost in Translation...Garbage and Flowers and Nuts...OH MY!!!

Here are a few more items for your reading pleasure...(I'm sure you all know this, but you should click on the pics to enlarge for easier reading.)

Here in Okinawa, even things that you would consider utilitarian...or dirty even, are made pleasant. I'll have to get a shot of the construction zone signs. They attach landscape photos to them...to give you something pleasing to look at while you are reading the orange sign, I guess? Dad...you're a photographer...with some pull at the road dept. right? Maybe you could suggest this? Also...the detour signs here genuinely apologize for the inconvenience they cause to me. We didn't get anything remotely close that time we had to detour through the Bear Lake area due to a road closure and it took us an hour out of our way...maybe you could work on that, too? (Polite road signs...what would Americans think?)

I saw a garbage truck yesterday. Not only was it immaculately clean, it had a better paint job than my minivan. It was a gorgeous metallic teal, with not a ding on it.

Recycling Zen...

Do your flowers have the name? But do they sing?

OK...do we talk TO the nuts? About them? Maybe to each other with nuts in our mouths? Isn't that bad manners? What's joyful about that?

Until next time...Sionara!
