We are the Stuarts (formerly of Imperial) now residing in Okinawa, Japan.

This blog started from a desire to bridge the miles as we were preparing to leave the USA for 3+ years. It has turned into much more. It's part travel diary, part personal reflection, part "sociology of military life" and part mommy-blog. We hope you read something here that is interesting to you (or at least not a total waste of your time).

Court of Honor

Tonight we FINALLY had a court of honor for our Boy Scout troop. It's embarrassing for our troop, but we have not had one in 2 years. The boys have been earning rank and merit badges the whole time, so it made Troy and Patrick both look really busy when they started reading off everything they have earned. Since the last court of honor, they have attended 2 week-long Scout camps, 2 Scout fairs and 2 3-day long merit badge festivals...in addition to their weekly meetings and miscellaneous campouts. Troy earned his Star rank earlier this year, and it looks like he will receive his Life rank before we leave, and we hope he'll be able to complete his Eagle project while we are here, too, even though he won't be able to receive his Eagle until we get to Okinawa because of the time in rank requirement. Patrick will leave here with the rank of Star as he earned his First Class rank earlier this year. They've each earned a ton of merit badges, too.

I'm sure proud of my boys!

Handshake look weird? Scouts shake left-handed. It takes some getting used to.

My favorite part is the mom pin that comes with a kiss. (Parent pin...whatever! We know where the bread is buttered!...I guess I better take that back. Cliff is the one that has taken them to Scout camp for the past 3 years!) Anyhoo, each time the Scout achieves a new rank, there is a "parent pin" that is traditionally pinned onto the mom by her Scout. Usually, the Scout pins it upside down, and he has to do a "good turn" before she can turn it right side up.

See Patrick's (empty) shirt? It's a new one. His former shirt was stolen at Scout camp...so much for honest, trustworthy, yadda-yadda, huh? Between the shirt and the patches, that was a $50 lesson learned!

Notice my handy-dandy sash for all my "flair"? One side is Cub Scout colors, and it has the pins from all 3 boys' Cub Scout ranks, and the other side is Boy Scout colors, and is for their Boy Scout ranks. I do feel like kind of a fanatic when I wear it, but at least I don't wear it to work or out shopping or anything, right? Boys are so much fun!

Honest, loyal, trustworthy...I don't know...this looks like a pretty rough bunch!
