We are the Stuarts (formerly of Imperial) now residing in Okinawa, Japan.

This blog started from a desire to bridge the miles as we were preparing to leave the USA for 3+ years. It has turned into much more. It's part travel diary, part personal reflection, part "sociology of military life" and part mommy-blog. We hope you read something here that is interesting to you (or at least not a total waste of your time).

Construction Congeniality

This is one of the many things I am going to miss when we leave here. Even the signage is polite. Notice the pretty flowers to brighten up the sign? And they don't just tell you to keep away or move around. They express appreciation for my inconvenience.

But this picture....this one takes the cake:

It is my all time favorite. I love it. I want to give this little turtle a hug and tell him that it's OK...I don't mind. Why is this sign so awesome? Let me count the ways. It encompasses so many aspects of Japanese culture. First of all, it has a cartoon on it. Animated characters are used Eve.ry.where and on anything! Secondly, the bow...with the eyes closed, even! And the "Sorry". The fact that this turtle feels so bad about not letting me through TOTALLY makes up for the fact that I have to go around.

I love this place!
