We are the Stuarts (formerly of Imperial) now residing in Okinawa, Japan.

This blog started from a desire to bridge the miles as we were preparing to leave the USA for 3+ years. It has turned into much more. It's part travel diary, part personal reflection, part "sociology of military life" and part mommy-blog. We hope you read something here that is interesting to you (or at least not a total waste of your time).

Back to School 2010

Yet another first day of school, but this year is different than last. Firstly, Troy is in college...and while I should have taken a picture of him driving off to his first day of class (last week) I did not. Oh, and by the way, he got his "local" drivers license, too. I'm sure some of you will remember when he got his California license, but you have to be 18 to drive off base here, so it was like starting all over again. He's doing great, even though it was a little scary (for me) at first.

Anyway...where was I? Oh...so Troy is in college and Coree and Jake are home schooling again this year (blast from the past). Coree is attempting to skip a grade to avoid returning to the middle school she attended half-time last year. (She's enrolled in 9th grade classes online.) There was also no way I was sending Jake to middle school. (Just like back in 2003, the year we started home schooling. Troy was heading into a WAY less than desirable situation {understatement} at our local middle school. Just couldn't derail him like that.) Jake is taking half his classes online and half we are designing together with resources we've used in the past with the older kids, and some great, new recommendations.

I should have made Coree and Jake stand out in front of the tree to take their picture anyway...but it just seemed corny (not that that usually stops me).

So, that left Patrick as the lone Stuart, venturing into the world of compulsory, public education this year.

And there he goes...

He's determined it's going to be an epic year. Here's hoping it is epic for ALL of us!
