We are the Stuarts (formerly of Imperial) now residing in Okinawa, Japan.

This blog started from a desire to bridge the miles as we were preparing to leave the USA for 3+ years. It has turned into much more. It's part travel diary, part personal reflection, part "sociology of military life" and part mommy-blog. We hope you read something here that is interesting to you (or at least not a total waste of your time).

Happy Birthday to our favorite April Fool!

I wonder if he'll ever get tired of that?....NAH!! I'm sure he loves it! Who would have thunk that 15 years ago, Patrick's disposition would SO match his presentation into the world. Patrick was actually not due until April 12th, but since Troy was 3 weeks early, my greatest fear (OK...that's a bit of hyperbole) was that he'd be born on April 1st and hate me for it. When I went into labor on the morning of the 31st of March, and my doctor admitted me, my first thought was "YES! We made it!" As the hours ticked by, though...23 of them to be exact...not so much!

Some of you already know this...and now the rest of you do, too...Patrick entered the world butt first on April Fool's Day. That's right...he came out mooning the world. Evidently, he had found a comfy spot, and he wasn't moving. This stubbornness has remained with him, along with that unique sense of humor. He looked like a little old man with a serious expression...even the baby photographers couldn't make him smile...and he still has a pretty intensely serious side.

Patrick's birthday wishes? Dinner at his favorite restaurant here...CoCo Curry House Ichibanya (the Denny's of curry, but VERY popular with Marines), a Guitar Hero/Karaoke house party next weekend with all the Plaza brats (including 2 others celebrating early April birthdays) and an iPod. Hmmm...you can't have it all, I suppose!

Here are some pics from dinner. CoCo's is a chain...and they are all pretty tiny. They actually remind me of Waffle House in their design...cute, but way too small for the amount of business that they do. They need to fire their architect or something.

Waiting in a vestibule forever to be seated is NOT part of the charm!

Coree: Definitely part of the charm!

I told Patrick to look happy, it was his birthday!

Not happy enough...I told him to look reeally, insanely happy!

That's better!

Jake does insanely happy...

Troy does insanely happy...for real.

Nom, nom, nom...

We all get our standard curries...

Mom: Chicken cutlet, vegetables added, regular spice
Troy: Seafood, level 5 spice
Patrick: Beef cutlet, regular spice
Coree: Chicken cutlet, mild spice
Jake: Mushroom, regular spice

Here's how the spice levels work (click to enlarge):

Troy says he has to work his way up to level 10 spice. He bases this on some sort of video game math that would not allow him NOT to try to achieve the highest level. Good luck, Troy!

HOLY SMOKES!!! Your kids are SO BIG!! I didn't think it had been that long since I'd seen you guys, but whoa! What the heck happened?!

I'm glad you found me! This is such an easy way to keep in touch.

I remember Patrick when he was three too - I loved that he said his name with an English accent!

Too funny! Ryan tried to come out butt first, but they saw it just in time and the doctor went up there and flipped him! It hurt to laugh for months!! LOL! Great choice for dinner! April 1st suits him just dandy!!
